I have a visceral reaction to Mitt Romney, a very unpleasant one. It's unfair of me, and he may have some very fine qualities, but he really comes off to me as a stiff and dishonest hack, and a child of privilege. Being a rich kid is not a crime in itself, but to convince yourself that it makes you better than someone or worthy of envy is not an attractive trait in anyone, especially someone running for the Presidency.
Like I told a guy years ago who was giving me unsolicited advice about personal matters: If at some point I want my life to resemble yours in any way, I'll get in touch.
Hey, Mitt Romney: If I want my life to resemble yours in any way, then you can call me envious.
I never expected to get rich in this life. I've been blue collar all the way: Airman, avionics tech, musician, and woodworker. I've done better at some times than others, but we always did just fine. No, I never expected to get rich, but I was raised to believe that if I busted my ass, and was honest and decent to people that I'd have enough. Hell, I watched my father do it.
The game was always rigged, but it didn't used to be so damn mean. Where I grew up in Long Beach, CA, three young people could get entry-level jobs and afford to rent a decent house near the beach. They could keep a car on the road. Boy, has that changed. Among the other people I don't envy are the kids in this college town where I live, who are lucky if they can swing a decent bicycle and who are in many cases taking on crippling debt to attend school. I wish them well, and hope there's somewhere for them to work when they get out.
I've been incredibly lucky. I don't have a lot of money, but we have a decent if modest home, and barring any catastrophes we'll be able to keep it. If I can get the knee surgery I need (we're working on that) and get back to work, we may just be OK. I didn't expect to get rich, and I don't need to be rich. All I ever expected was a chance to keep working and a way to help my kids get a leg up. I don't think that's unreasonable.
I've never seen a Republican candidate that I'd vote for. If I did, I'd tell them they're in the wrong party. I do remember a time when they weren't all such stupid douchebags, though. Even Reagan, who was as full of shit as anyone I've ever seen, had more sense than to call potential voters jealous bums.
I don't want a damn thing of Mitt Romney's. I don't have much, but what I have I came by honestly. I didn't have to screw anyone out their pension to get it. The only thing I feel I have a right to expect from Romney is a little basic decency and respect, and if he's not capable of that he can pack his stuff and go home.
