Let me add a little bit of info to Ipsos's wonderful diary written on March 2 to further encourage you to take action at the local level. He followed up with a Part 2 today.
At the moment (Monday afternoon, March 5), Think Progress can only identify two sponsors who have not yet agreed to drop their advertising on Rush Limbaugh's radio program. They are LifeLock and Lear Capital (GoldCoinPro).
The contact info for these two sponsors is on the link.
But the only way to effect change is to get the local radio stations that carry his filth to realize that Limbaugh is hurting them in the pocketbook.
But as a former radio station program director, this writer knows the real key to fighting back against the filth being spread by Limbaugh is to contact the local radio stations who carry his program. Ask for the station manager. Tell the manager that you will not patronize a single advertiser on that station until they take Limbaugh off they air. If they need to replace him with another right wing loudmouth, there are a lot of other ones to choose from. But you need to make it clear when you talk to the station manager that you are serious, that you have called 10 friends who will each promise to call 10 friends who will each call 10 friends, and they can see the results when their Spring ratings book comes out.
Now, you may ask, who in my state carries this detestable radio program?
Limbaugh lists the radio stations that carry his show at this link from his site. Unfortunately, it is too long a list to be included in this article. If for some reason he removes the link from his site, visit the list at Deep Brain Media and find the station near you.
Radio station owners are not politicians. They are business people. If they finally realize that a performer they provide a broadcast platform to is costing them money, they will bounce him faster than Michael Jordan in his heyday making a drive to the paint for an easy layup.
Remember:
The key is to be polite, professional and firm. If they tell you the Station Manager is not available, ask when would be a good time to call, then call back. If they continue to blow you off, ask for the Sales Manager or the Program Director. If nobody will talk to you, leave messages or send e-mails. On the list below, if you see a hyperlink, that means that station has a website where you can possibly send an e-mail.
Use your own words, but here's a template you could use.
"As much as I support the fact that it's your right to air whatever programming you see fit, I think it's important that you know that as long as Rush Limbaugh is carried on your radio station, I will not patronize any of the sponsors who advertise on your station. Not just on Rush's show -- on your station. I have called 10 friends who have also agreed to call 10 friends who will ask them to call 10 friends and you get the idea. If it is your decision to continue to provide a broadcast platform, I will not only boycott your advertisers, but when the time comes for your license renewal, I will file an objection with the Federal Communications Commission stating that, in my opinion, you are not broadcasting in the public interest. How can it be in the interest of the American public to provide a broadcast platform for someone who says the hateful, divisive things Rush Limbaugh says? Please consider this request and consider the success of your radio station."
Supporters of women's rights have done a wonderful job, so far, but there is much more to be done.
