One of the favorite memes of the right these days is that “Gas prices have more than doubled since Obama took office.” Now, while that is TECHNICALLY correct it is also highly misleading. It’s true that in January 2009, when Obama was sworn into office, the average price of a gallon of gas in the U.S. was an artificially low $1.61. But that was a direct result of the massive recession we were living through at that time.
What the right won’t tell you is that, just six months earlier, in the summer of 2008, the price of a gallon of gas peaked at $4.11. The highest price so far under Obama has been around $3.90 per gallon - about 20 cents less than it was under Bush - which is pretty much where it sits today (though it appears to be dropping ever so incrementally).
