rfall mentioned it in Thrusdays overnight news and the MSM has been splattercasting it, but, as a public service, here's one more reminder:
CHECK YOUR 'PUTER FOR DNSCHANGER MALWARE BEFORE MIDNIGHT.
The basics:
A group of Estonian crackers (not "hackers") wrote a piece of malware called DNSChanger, which surreptitiously reroutes your browser from the IP addresses you enter to lookalike "ghost" sites. The FBI busted the ring and set up a group of servers to re-reroute browsing computers infected with the malware to the correct sites.
However, at midnight tonight, the feebs will be shutting off their traffic cop servers, so if your 'puter is infected with DNSChanger, you will likely be unable to go anywhere in the tubes.
The DNS Changer Working Group http://www.dcwg.org/ has links to DNSChanger detectors and fixes. The detector does not install software in your computer.
Despite all the warnings, it's estimated there are at least 300,000 still-infected boxes out there, maybe more.
The bad news:
DNSChanger is rooted on the boot sector of the hard drive, so if you are infected, you will have to back up all your data before applying fixes, which require a complete wipe and operating system re-install.
The schadenfreude:
The largest number of internetless victims tomorrow (aside from your mom and your friend who's always calling you to say his computer is "broken" and, when you determine the reason, it's always PEBCAM) is expected to come from Fortune 500 companies who, despite all the warnings, have done nothing to secure their systems.
Then again, there won't be much freude to the schaden if your bank or uitility is among the victims and you're trying to pay your bills.
If you haven't already, run a quick check and, drag as it is, fix the thing before the feebs cut their servers.
