Yep, it's a diary about nothing but hummingbirds. Sometimes you've got to kick back, take a deep breath, and just watch the hummingbirds.
Hummingbirds are cool, real cool! They're the only bird that regularly flies backward, their resting pulse rate is something around 300 beats per minute (don't ask me how you take the pulse of a hummingbird, they can be belligerent, and they're highly entertaining.
We get lots of broad-tailed hummingbirds nesting and spending the summer where I live. After the chicks hatch, it's not uncommon to get 30-40 hummingbirds at 2 or 3 feeders in the evening and morning. I go through around 5 lbs of sugar a week with a 5 parts water 1 part sugar mixture, but it's well worth it.
They don't lose their fear of people, but they become very tolerant and curious. If I stand still next to the feeder and hold my hand out, they'll land on my hand, or my head. They also fly in very rapid short bursts. So one second they're over there, and the next second, they're six inches from your face staring at you.
This is the end of the season and they're starting to move on, and it's a Saturday morning, so I thought I'd just post a few pictures of some highly entertaining critters.
