Dear fellow Kossaks,

We have had many diaries about the atrocities committed in Uganda on people just trying to live and love. The problems are much closer to home. We think of Jamaica as a laid back place for good music, winter getaways, cruise ship stops and Rastas. Many of us inside during "Sno-mageddon 13" is thinking about it now.The Island nation has a dark side.

I am not one to ask for support here. I have been a long time member, and snarky commenter. I feel this important subject can be given a wider audience through you, dear Kossaks.

Please read below the frolicking orange Sciuridae and kick in a buck or two.

My colleague is  a documentary film maker -- and has worked for PBS, Nat Geo, CNN, and HBO, among others.

Over the last four years, he has been making a film documenting the lives of two gay Jamaicans, who were forced by homophobic violence -- and the threat of violence -- to flee their homeland.

The film, called "An Abominable Crime" (after the language in the Jamaican law that criminalizes homosexuality), is a gripping and emotionally powerful story with two incredible characters.

Simone Edwards is a brave lesbian mother, who barely survives a murderous attack -- and then is forced to choose between a life in hiding in Jamaica with her young daughter -- or a life alone as an asylum seeker abroad.

Maurice Tomlinson, Jamaica’s leading human rights activist and an active member of the MCC Church, is also forced to flee his homeland when he is publicly outed by a Jamaican newspaper -- shortly after filing a legal challenge to Jamaica's destructive anti-gay laws.

Maurice when he decides to risk his life by returning home to continue his work ...

He is now on the verge of completing the film and have just launched a Kickstarter campaign to get us across the homestretch!

The Pulitzer Center has generously offered to match, dollar for dollar, up to $15,000 on all future Kickstarter contributions to the film -- so that every dollar donated over the next three weeks will be doubled!

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
