Some big news today from Ed FitzGerald's (D. OH) gubernatorial campaign:
Historians and pundits always say that the first real decision a governor makes is the one of running mate. Today, I made that decision and I wanted you to be the first to know.
I’m honored to announce that State Senator Eric Kearney of Cincinnati is my choice to be my running mate – and the next Lieutenant Governor of Ohio.
Many of you know Eric already –if not personally, by reputation. Eric is known for being one of the most effective members of the Ohio legislature, able to reach across party lines to get things done.
He is also a fierce advocate for Ohio’s middle-class families and children and shares my commitment to restoring those values to our state’s economy.
Eric’s values are rooted in his Ohio upbringing, and extend from his career to his personal life. He and his wife Jan-Michele are raising two great kids in Cincinnati, near the house in which he grew up, and together they run a small business.
Over the next year, you’re going to get to know Eric a lot better, and I know he’ll make you proud.
In the meantime, please let Eric know that you're glad he's part of our team. Share your personal welcome note and we'll make sure he gets it.

Here's why this is big news:

Kearney, 50, said FitzGerald called him with the news Friday, according to The Enquirer.
“In a lot of ways, [we] finished each other’s sentences,” Kearney told his hometown newspaper. “That was a good indication in my mind.”
Kearney is sharing the news with Democratic caucus members this afternoon.
FitzGerald's spokesman, Matt McGrath, declined to confirm or comment on the pending announcement when asked by Northeast Ohio Media Group earlier Wednesday.
The news of Kearney's choice followed an analysis posted Wednesday morning on cleveland.com that explored the trouble FitzGerald has had attracting support from black political leaders, particularly on his home turf in the Cleveland area.
Kearney is a well-respected black leader in Ohio, but FitzGerald told The Enquirer that was not the deciding factor.
“It’s not why he was chosen, but everyone has communities that they come from and have a long history or record with, and he certainly does have an excellent reputation in the African-American community,” FitzGerald said. “The African-American community should be important to any campaign.” - Northeast Ohio Media Group, 11/20/13
