I just heard her sing the most amazing medley of songs from Porgy and Bess, courtesy of WRTI, the Temple University public radio station. (My go-to station for both classical and jazz, on air or streamed on the Intertoobz.)

I don't think this is the exact same version WRTI played, but it will give you a sense of her voice, if you don't know her:

(That might not be the version WRTI played, but it's the same medley. There's another clip below the fleur-de-kos which I think is even better.)

Patti Austin (born August 10, 1950)[1] is an American R&B, Pop and Jazz music singer. In 2008 she received the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal album for "Avant Gershwin" recorded mostly live with The WDR Big Band in Germany.

Slap that bass!

But I just think she's a terrific singer, and does Gershwin as I'd rather hear him: not in the High C notes of classic sopranos, but in the lower and more entertaining range of the mezzo or alto.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

My cat is thinking much the same thing, I'm sure...

well except for the part where he doesn't understand why my typing should interfere with his head resting against my wrist, LOL.

      But he's a good boy, very laid-back.

Wishing you better weather than we're getting here!

OTOH, good news: around ten, when I took a short break, one of our regular cops came by for a coffee. So I asked him, "How is it out there? Lots of accidents?"  And he said no, it was good, but they were all waiting for lots of accidents to occur -- nervous, iow. So maybe -- this being a Sunday -- most people who don't HAVE to travel for work, aren't.

B/c around here, bad weather usually means a ton of accidents. People don't know how to drive in snow...and ice is so very much worse. Of course the main roads have been they're slush puddles.

back in the 1990's. She was very popular in Japan and we went there often to do shows. We were in Florida when the LA riots broke out in 1992. As the band was all from LA they were very worried about what was happening back home. She was great to work for, a really nice person.

    •  Thanks! I didn't know anything about her (1+ / 0-)

but when I heard her voice it was...well, she sings like an angel, I guess.

I can understand why she was very popular in Japan. I just don't understand why she isn't very popular GLOBALLY. She's just terrific.
