A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

What did you want to grow up to be when you were a kid?
Did any of that dream become part of you?

1960 fire truck

1960 vintage fire truck. I wanted to be the guy steering in the back.

One day when I was five years old I was sitting in the dirt in the front yard, playing with a pill bug and sucking on a stalk of sour grass, when a very large, very long fire truck went slowly rumbling down our residential street. I could feel the vibration of it through my bottom, and I gazed agog at the two firemen in the cab as the seemingly endless length of red truck went by. At the very back of the truck sat a man in a fireman's hat, turning a steering wheel of his very own as the fire engine slowly turned right and headed up 34th Street. He waved at me. I tentatively waved back.

I wanted to be a fireman. I wanted to be him, sitting apart and above everyone, steering his own path while also being part of that massive truck.

It wasn't long, of course, before I was informed that girls couldn't be firemen, nor could they be my second choice, train conductors. I now know women in both professions.

And though I never did become a fireman it recently occurred to me that, in a sense, I have been like that guy all my life. I've been drawn to helping professions, mostly medical in nature. I've always arranged my work life so that I'm part of a larger team with a positive purpose but, at the same time, I've gotten to steer my own path. As an X-ray tech I was part of an interconnected team of doctors and nurses and administrators and technicians and clerks, but I gravitated to working alone on nights and weekends where I could make all my own decisions. Now I share a private practice with paradise50 who works opposite days from mine, and whoever is in the office is running their own show for the good of both the practice and the patients. Even in my 'hobbies' the same pattern has held, that of joining worthwhile groups while finding ways to make contributions in my own way on my own time. I've joined up with groups in Daily Kos like Welcome New Users and Partners & Mentors where I'm part of this greater whole which has a positive mission but where I do most of my work all by myself, in front of my own computer.

I do like having that little steering wheel, that little illusion of autonomy.

How about you? Did what you wanted to be as a kid show up in some way in your adult life?

Three Star Kossacks & Nashville KosKats Meet-up

by marykkfor Three Star Kossacks

The Three Star Kossacks and the Nashville KosKats met Saturday, March 8th for dinner and then a show afterward to welcome Sandy on Signal to town. About 15 people attended. The organizer marykk said it was the most well attended and succesful event yet for her Kossacks. State Senate Candidate Mary Mancini attended as well as a representative from Planned Parenthood due to an upcoming amendment to the state Constitution which would allow more restrictive abortion legislation.

Here's a couple of photos:

?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
