Samantha Hulsey is a 24-year-old transwoman who recently moved from Savanah, GA to San Francisco in order to live openly as herself. On Saturday she had a date with 52-year-old transwoman Rae Raucci, who is a first year student at San Francisco Law School.
The couple boarded the 49 Muni bus in the South of Market neighborhood. A rider on the bus immediately began acting violently towards them. The man aggressively yelled at them, calling them faggots and accusing them of defrauding him by appearing to be female in public.
The man unfortunately was armed with a steak knife.
He started saying a lot of hateful things and messing with us. He was threatening to hurt us. The way he was behaving leads me to believe he was on some kind of drugs. He was obviously not sober.
--Hulsey
Having seen the knife, Hulsey and Raucci disembarked at Van Ness and Golden Gate. So did their assailant. The man ran after them and plunged the knife into Hulsey's upper chest, just below her neck. He stabbed her a second time as she tried to protect Raucci.
With a hand covering a bloody wound, Hulsey ran into a nearby McDonald's.
I’m very sorry for the nice man who was enjoying his McDouble when I ran in bleeding and screaming for police.
I had been bullied and had things thrown at me in Savannah but no one tried to kill me. That sort of thing shouldn’t happen here.
--Hulsey
Hulsey was examined at a hospital. No organs were found to be punctured. Her wounds were closed and she was released.
Police say they have the assailant in custody but released no further details.
He basically said we were offending him. Transgender people are a part of the society that some people don’t understand, and what they don’t understand, they fear. It serves to show that violence can show up anywhere.

Today my lovely young friend Samantha was stabbed twice in the upper chest on a SF MUNI bus as we were both heading home down Van Ness Avenue. We were both on the bus together when a man across the way accused us both of defrauding him by pretending to be female. At one point he asked Samantha "do you look female?", for example, and repeatedly called us "faggots". He continued to harass us, and when the bus stopped to get help he pulled out a knife after we got up to leave and followed us out of the bus doors and stabbed Samantha once. She got a second stab wound trying to get between me and the maniac. Ten stitches at the ER... and we're both pretty rattled...
