If you look at the corner photo in the tweet above—a screen capture since the original has been removed—you'll see three soldiers. They're blurry, but they are wearing Nazi SS uniforms, helmets, insignia and gear. At the right, you can see a better view.
Michael Nieberg first raised the matter on Twitter, asking: "are those troops in the bottom Wehrmacht?!"
In stepped others. Josh noted "They're Waffen SS based on the camo pattern." The Waffen SS were elite Nazi Stormtroopers widely known early in World War II for their military skills and ferocity and their penchant for atrocities.
John Schindler, a fellow who seems to know his Nazi uniforms, tweeted: "they're wearing Waffen-SS cuff titles, FFS...dude on left has late-war SS 'dot' camo uniform." This sparked some discussion in which a couple of people said these were American uniforms. Schindler fired back with photos clearly showing that the ones in the Trump tweet were indeed SS fashion. Others also weighed in, and in a few tweets with links, readers could learn more about Nazi uniforms than they ever wanted to know.
Schindler subsequently noted: "Confirmed: Trump used a recent pic of fat, middle-aged WW2 Waffen-SS reenactors for his OH SHIT campaign ad."
Here's the original—tracked down by LeftyBollocks:
How hard can it be to find a photo of American soldiers in American uniforms?
The Trump campaign is blaming it on an intern:
"Mr. Trump has been in Charlottesville, Virginia all day at the opening of a development. A young intern created and posted the image and did not see the very faded figures within the flag of the stock photo. The intern apologized and immediately deleted the tweet."
Faded figures? Riiiiiiiiight.
Did anyone think Trump personally chose the photo? It just goes to show he can’t run a decent team. Which is kind of necessary as chief executive.
