House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA)
Kevin McCarthy is trying to go on offense to defend himself over last week's too-truthful assessment of the Benghazi Committee's purpose and accomplishments. The House majority leader said that "Everybody thought Hillary Clinton was unbeatable right? But we put together a Benghazi Special Committee, a select committee. What are her numbers today? Her numbers are dropping." Now, with those remarks undermining the political mission he was bragging about to begin with, McCarthy is answering with bluster:
“Let’s be very clear: Benghazi is not political,” McCarthy said. “It was created for one purpose and one purpose only: to find the truth on behalf of the families of the four dead Americans. Period.”
“The integrity of [committee chairman Rep.] Trey Gowdy, the integrity of the work that has been done has never come into question and it never should be. Stop playing politics,” he added.”
Stop. Playing. Politics. In this context, "playing politics" means quoting Kevin McCarthy accurately and then pointing out the ways that the $4.5 million Benghazi Committee has itself
played all kinds of politics. Kevin McCarthy would rather we not do that, because Trey Gowdy's integrity is not to be questioned, except that there are lots of legitimate questions about it.
This has to be one that even the craven Beltway media can't let McCarthy just deny out of existence, right? (Right?)
