In the case of this particular right wing terrorist it may be possible to rule Fox out as his major source of information and inspiration.
Dear lived for years in a cabin that had no electricity or running water in the North Carolina mountains, about 15 miles west of Asheville.
His more recent address at 809 Ouray Road, Hartsel, CO, doesn’t look like it has power either if you go there by google map.
I imagine the guy would love Fox and right wing internet, but I don’t picture this guy setting up a generator and getting a Dish satellite set up. Maybe he spent time in a public library but it’s very possible his primary source of information and inspiration was a battery powered radio.
While right wing media will be working hard to distance itself from another American terrorist it owns, hopefully the investigators will ask him a few questions about what his favorite radio shows were.
I used radio locator to see what signals he might be getting. At his location near Hartsel it looks like he probably had quite a few of the national right wing radio blowhards available, with some of the locals also. Maybe he amplified the antenna or listened with his ear close but I listed only the ones with strong or moderate signals.
Most of the music only came in with weak signals. A couple of country music stations came in with moderate signals. There were three public radio stations, all on weak signals. The only strong signals were the Rush Limbaugh/Colorado Buffalos station, 850 KOA, and 670 KLTT, a religious station. It looks like KOA is the only Limbaugh station he could hear clearly, although Limbaugh is readily available all over the state.
Below are the 5 talk radio and 2 religious stations with moderate and strong signals. I went to the talk radio sites and listed the more recognizable hosts. I pity myself that I recognize most of their names and faces, and have heard most of them for a least a few minutes here and there.
Those five Republican talk stations blast Hartsel and that area with 18 right wing talk show hosts. About 10 of those are national blowhards. Limbaugh has about 600 stations and Hannity, Beck, and Levin probably are heard from 400 to 500 stations each. I’m surprised Michael Savage wasn’t available to the terrorist — maybe on a weaker signal. All 18 of these talkers would probably have used the term “baby parts” regularly since the video came out in reference to Planned Parenthood. On his July 31st program Limbaugh mentioned “baby parts” at least 3 times, and calling Planned Parenthood ‘Planned Butcherhood’ on his site. All of those hosts have been attacking Planned Parenthood, just the way they would have attacked ACORN.
The radio air waves around Hartsel are probably indicative of what dominates most parts of rural America. Those are those red states filling much of the center of the US.
This does’t have to be. If Americans decide they don’t want their publicly funded universities renting their sports mascots and logos to nearly half of the Rush Limbaugh stations, including these 90, the Republican PSYOPS known as RW radio will collapse. Otherwise those schools, like the University of Colorado, will continue to crap on their own mission statements to partner with Limbaugh to help him and others on those stations incite more domestic terrorism, deny global warming, and make excuses for racists.
Strong signal.
Limbaugh, Mike Rosen
KOA is the loudest station in the state and reaches dozens of states at night- they used to say 38 states. KOA decided to reduce their hate talk in favor of University of Colorado Buffaloes football, Broncos, and Rockies baseball and it looks like this is the station the terrorist would have to go to to catch Limbaugh at 10AM. It probably came in strong on that battery powered radio.
Rosen may be the biggest Colorado talker. He’s in his twilight years and like many top local talkers in any state is a guy who has probably been to more than a few social events with state GOP govs, reps, and officials. He follows Limbaugh at 1PM and has a big Denver audience. He’s an Ayn Randian nut who wins arguments with callers about things like global warming by cutting them off to lecture them about their sentence structure or mispronunciation. He may have been the guy who directly followed liberal/pragmatic Alan Berg as loudest in Colorado after Berg was assassinated by some terrorists who came all the way from Oregon. What a dramatic turn around for the right.
I remember driving through southern CO maybe 15 years ago and hearing Limbaugh on 5 different stations. KOA is clear over most of the state during the day and probably a few more. KOA gets to announce “850 KOA, home of the Buffs, and Rush Limbaugh!”
Shame on CU. Recently CU hosted a Republican presidential debate and rationalized the expense as a way to spread their ‘brand’. CU is stuck with an administration that RW Colorado stations like KOA helped elect and select.
Moderate signal.
KLZ features Laura Ingraham, Dana Loesch, Steve Deace.
Yuck.
Moderate signal.
KHOW features Mandy Connell, Sean Hannity, Michael Brown, Glen Beck, Jon Caldera.
Yes, that’s Michael “doin a heck of a job brownie!” Brown. Brown’s radio career may have been a payoff. And he’s just like you’d expect. They brought Connell in from Kentucky to help turn CO red, I guess they had so many right wing hacks in Kentucky they could export her to Colorado. She’s got that rough, certain voice they like. Caldera is or was president of the Independence Institute, a RW ‘free market’ think tank, and worships at the alter of Ayn Rand.
Moderate signal
Bill Bennett, Peter Boyles, Dan Caplis, Dennis Prager, Hugh Hewitt, Mark Levin, Michael Medved, Mike Gallagher
Not familiar with Gallagher but the others are ‘right to lifers’. Boyles and Caplis are locals who I think were at earlier stages of their careers sold as ‘moderates’ by the right wing radio bosses in Colorado. Boyles did a job on the Denver OWS protestors, pressuring the governor and cops to clear the dirty riff raff out of the streets so commuters weren’t inconvenienced and made to see trash, etc.
Moderate signal. Until about 2014 it was the only true liberal talk station in CO.
Leo LaPorte, Clark Howard, misc business related programming.
Tech and business talk. Not sure about the local talkers.
This used to be the only liberal talk station in Colorado, I think starting in 2006. That’s when CO went blue. The station was sabotaged over several years, with the national liberal talkers replaced by lower talent sold as local flavor. It worked, and they switched to ‘business’ oriented programming before the 2014 elections- going right to Republican talkers would be a bit much- and CO went purple.
So, in a state that legalized pot, there is no real liberal talk radio once again.
The other station with a strong signal in Hartsel.
Moderate signal.
