I repeat I-10 CLOSED INDEFINITLY- Flash flooding took out one of the bridges. This will be a long term closure.
Interstate-10 is closed eastbound in Indio from the 86 Expressway on. That's forcing all traffic to go south on the 86. You'll take that all the way to Interstate-8, almost at the U.S.-Mexican border. Then head east to Yuma, get on State Highway-95 back up to interstate-10 at Quartzsite and from there you're clear to Phoenix.
Interstate 10 westbound is being diverted in Blythe at intake road. Traffic is being routed onto State-Highway 95 northbound up to Highway 62.
Then traffic will head west through Twentynine Palms, Yucca Valley, Morongo Valley and then back to iInterstate-10-just west of palm springs near whitewater...
UPDATE: The Bridge earned an A rating last year(fyi loud ads)
The bridge had a "sufficiency rating" of 91.5 out of 100, higher than dozens of other interstate bridges, according to the Federal Highway Administration. Yet as recently as 2013, the bridge was listed as "functionally obsolete" — inadequate for its task, but not unsafe and without known structural problems that needed to be fixed. The classification often means that a bridge is either too small or poorly suited for modern-day traffic. Seven other I-10 bridges have been deemed "functionally obsolete."
Federal Highway Administration data list 119 obsolete bridges and 79 structurally deficient bridges in Riverside County, Calif., a 7,303-square-mile swath that stretches from just east of Los Angeles to the Arizona border.
And could have
limited reopening in the next several weeks.
While the eastbound span of the Interstate 10 bridge collapsed, the westbound span still stands — though severe erosion means it is not passable.
A spokesman for the California Department of Transportation said Monday that work crews plan to shore up the westbound span within several weeks. Eastbound traffic could then use one of the bridge's two lanes, for now.
Caltrans spokesman Will Shuck didn't have an exact timeframe for the limited reopening, but said, "we're certainly not talking about months."
Alt routes
The Arizona Department of Transportation said the travelers entering California on I-10 can take State Route 177 to State Route 62 to rejoin I-10 in Palm Springs.
Okay, now to the political part of this. THIS IS WHY WE NEED INFRASTRUCTURE SPENDING!
Both parties have failed on this, both have ignored the MASSIVELY UNDERFUNDED infrastructure in this country and now we have a major freeway closed.
I have driven over this bridge 1000s of times, it was old, needed to upgraded and maintained. All the bridges over washes such as these should be monitored, especially in flash flood prone states.
We hadrecord breaking rain in California (my home state though I live in AZ now) yesterday, a few days ago Wickenburg AZ flooded as well. Now will come the climate change deniers bitching that no one prepared us for this. Guess what idiots? WE DAMN WELL TRIED, YOU CHOSE NOT TO LISTEN!!
All of this, all of it, could have been prevented if people just listened!
So now there are 1000s of ppl stranded on I10 due to flooding days after a fire swept through another part of California burning over 20 cars, fortunately no one was killed. This is not the end times you ignorant dolts, these are the consequences for not listening to SCIENCE!!
Oh and politicians? This is what your greed has wrought. Hope you enjoy it you jackasses.
(Update: Now that I'm mildly calmer.) Businesses are going to be screaming bloody murder now because of increased shipping. That is a LONG WAY around to go. Maybe that will get government to listen, FINALLY!
Oh and PLEASE SHARE THIS, not to make me Facebook Famous but so people know. Thanks!
(UPDATE) You can get to Desert Center from Quartzite now going west. At Desert Center both ways it's closed, both bridges are out.
Interstate 10 west has reopened between Quartzsite and California, however, I-10 remains closed in both directions at Desert Center because of a collapsed overpass, the Arizona Department of Transportation said Monday.
