About twenty years ago, as a surprise for my grandma, some family members decided to create a cookbook containing our family's recipes. My grandmother was truly the matriarch who held the several different branches of our family together--indeed, we haven't had a proper family reunion since she passed away in 2007--so the cookbook was dedicated to Grandma and her cooking. We had a tattered copy in our kitchen for many years, and lately, I've been wanting to get my hands on one just to read through it again. Finally, I got my mom to ask my aunt if there were any leftover copies, and lucky me, there was one left. A few days ago, the still-brand-new coookbook arrived in the mail:
I immediately started leafing through it, and it was a thoroughly enjoyable trip down memory lane, having grown up on my grandma's cooking. Starting with Grandma's introduction, which I could hear in her voice:
In the absence of another diary topic tonight, I thought I'd share some highlights from the cookbook. If you're looking for Michelin star cooking, you'll probably be disappointed, but I have a feeling more than a few people will probably remember eating similar food. Most of this cookbook consists of what the BF would lovingly call "white people food." That's probably an apt description. But if you love old family cookbooks as much as I do, I think you'll enjoy these recipes. Follow me below the blob of Velveeta...

The first section of the cookbook is dedicated to my grandma's recipes, and quite frankly, they're the most entertaining to read.
The above recipe is the same pie crust my grandma taught a very young (and very gay) Chrislove to make...
There are plenty of recipes from other family members as well, some of them serious and others not so much. Here are some excerpts:
So go stock up on your oleo (god, I hate that word), Miracle Whip, and Velveeta. You've got some cooking to do!
Now, on to the tops...
