Donald Trump is pulling a Ted Cruz. Not by being an asshole—both men are established experts there—but by getting a little ahead of himself, electorally speaking. Cruz announced his vice presidential pick while he was a long shot for the nomination, and Trump is announcing his transition team while he’s a long shot for the presidency. And who will be heading up Trump’s transition? For your own safety and comfort, finish swallowing anything you may be drinking, because it’s …
Chris Christie.
“Governor Christie is an extremely knowledgeable and loyal person with the tools and resources to put together an unparalleled Transition Team, one that will be prepared to take over the White House when we win in November. I am grateful to Governor Christie for his contributions to this movement," Trump said in a statement.
I have so many questions. Christie is one of Trump’s biggest and best endorsements, and he’s not holding out for vice president? Then again, Christie has a whopping 26 percent favorable rating in his home state, so maybe transition team is about his speed.
And what’s it like setting up a presidential administration for Donald flipping Trump? Bear in mind that, between now and next January, Trump is likely to change his mind 10 times on any given policy and feud and reconcile eight times with any given person. “He’s going to be in my Cabinet … no, I’m suing him … no, he’s my best friend … “
Also, Trump apparently thinks the way to show that he will be right on top of his administration is to have his administration put together by the guy whose defense, when his administration was caught causing massive traffic jams to retaliate against a political opponent, was that he didn’t know what his top aides were doing. Come to think of it, though, that’s probably exactly what a Trump administration would look like.
Happily, it doesn’t look like we’re going to have to live through a Trump administration. But let’s work really, really hard—harder than we’ve ever worked before—to be sure of that, okay?
