Welcome to the first in (what I hope) will become an ongoing series of diaries. The purpose of this series is simple: sharing music. Music is a powerful means of expressing ideas and emotions; so much so that even just sharing tracks can provide a powerful and thought provoking experience (especially for those paying attention.)
With that said, the intent here is to use music (in particular the sharing of songs and artists’ performances) as a means to share nebulous notions like, mood, emotion, or general ‘vibe’.
As an example, let’s consider the difficulty surrounding the task of properly articulating the vibe I might experience were I to be a conductor (for a train.)
In this case, I, your humble narrator, might spend hours constructing prose, which in style, form, and substance would mirror the literary greats of old. Each new line would add substance and form to a glorious mental portrait, depicting me and my thoughts as I operate a train.
However, that would be dumb, so here is the track “Time Flies By” by Half Man Half Biscuit,
Now, with that rambling introduction out of the way, lets get to business.
Our collection tonight is inspired by the internet, Oregon, and boredom.
To kick things off, we have, The Ettes, an amazing band, with an amazing style.
The first of two songs I’m going to share from The Ettes, titled Teeth, always makes me think about the troll and goon hunting squad here at the DK. Having trollish tendencies (only for the lulz, I swear) this track takes on dueling meanings for me (in addition to it’s normal interpretation.)
Next up, “My Heart”, by The Ettes, performed live for KEXP (the entire set is worth watching, which is why it was linked.)
Taking a not so sharp turn, we have The Reverend Horton Heat. Having seen these bastards live, their style, energy, and musicianship, are the stuff legends are born from.
They make the list today, because of the deteriorating, hilarious, sad, and generally dildo filled situation in Oregon. On Tuesday, the FBI reminded the budding scholars of constitutional law hold up at the Malheur Wildlife Refuge, that they do in fact have the authority to prosecute them. For those that know how the arrest of the leadership transpired, this next track, titled “The Devils Chasing Me”, might have a hidden meaning,
Our next song by The Revered Horton Heat, titled “Wiggle Stick”, needs no introduction, or contextual setup.
Closing out this train wreck of a diary, I’m going to wave my 90s-kid credentials and leave you with “Zealots”, by The Fugees.
If you’ve got an artist you love, or track that describes your day, mood, whatever … Share it in the comments.
Also, if you have any suggestions or ideas about the potential structure of these diaries, please let me know in the comments.
