Received this e-mail today from retiring U.S. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D. NV) on behalf of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee:
PCCC friends,
Minutes ago, the Associated Press reported, "Cruz suggests leaving vacancy on Supreme Court."
Ted Cruz and John McCain may have given away the Republican game plan on the Supreme Court. And we need to treat it like the constitutional crisis it will be if Democrats don't take back the Senate majority.
McCain said, "I promise you that we will be united against any Supreme Court nominee that Hillary Clinton, if she were president, would put up."
That means the Supreme Court could dwindle to 7, then maybe 6, Justices. It would turn our Justice system and our democracy on its head. The Founding Fathers would roll over in their graves.
I may be retiring, but I'm not out of the fight.
Please join me and make an emergency donation to the candidate running to keep my Nevada seat Democratic, Catherine Cortez Masto -- and other candidates the PCCC is helping to Take Back The Senate.
(The PCCC added new Call Out The Vote shifts to voters in my home state of Nevada this Friday and Saturday, and for other key races. See the new shifts here -- and do your part by signing up to Call Out The Vote at least once before Election Day.)
To win the majority, we must keep my seat blue and pick up at least 4 additional seats.
Catherine Cortez Masto (Nevada) was a wonderful Attorney General for our state. She used her power to fight the big Wall Street banks, along with Senator Elizabeth Warren. Her opponent votes for extreme policies and will vote for Donald Trump.
Russ Feingold (Wisconsin) is a progressive icon. We miss Russ's passion and integrity in the Senate. He's committed to taking on the Koch Brothers and reversing Citizens United. His opponent called Social Security a Ponzi scheme while Russ supports expanding Social Security.
Tammy Duckworth (Illinois) is a war hero who lost her legs in Iraq. She remains a fighter -- actively challenging corporate interests in her campaign. Her opponent votes lockstep with Mitch McConnell's obstruction.
Deborah Ross (North Carolina) is someone I relate to because all the pundits thought she couldn't win -- and now her race is neck and neck. A former ACLU director, she's used to standing on principle and winning upset victories. Her opponent voted to cut Social Security and opposes raising the minimum wage.
Maggie Hassan (New Hampshire) is a respected governor who supports issues like debt-free college and bold campaign finance reform. Her opponent called Donald Trump a role model. You heard that right.
Katie McGinty (Pennsylvania) is the favorite in this race, and the Koch Brothers have spent millions against her. Katie says, "We need to strengthen and expand Social Security for our seniors" and Elizabeth Warren is campaigning with her this week. Her opponent, Pat Toomey, literally wrote the book on Social Security privatization and he votes consistently for obstruction.
PCCC members stepped up to help Take Back The Senate in 2016. Sam, I need you to step up today.
Democrats likely won't win the Senate unless we win in Nevada. And these other great candidates are key to taking back the Senate -- and restoring sanity to the Supreme Court.
Please join me and make an emergency donation to these campaigns today. My grandkids and your grandkids will thank you for stepping up when history called.
(Or sign up to make calls from your home.)
Thank you.
Harry Reid
