In the wake a terrible couple weeks and a stinging Wisconsin loss, Camp Trump has determined it has a problem and is preparing to change course. Apparently, The Donald’s going to wade into the policy realm with a series of speeches, reports the Washington Post:
Among the topics he will address are how to strengthen the nation's military, specific education reforms and the criteria by which a President Trump would select Supreme Court justices.
This should go well. Remember what happened when he got specific about his abortion stance—punishing women—then backed off that, then said abortion was settled law.
The big problem for Trump is not just that he tanked in Wisconsin with women—the largest voting bloc in the nation—he also tanked with men. But really, the notion that Trump can shore up votes by talking more policy is simply laughable. Every time he’s forced to talk about anything beyond current polling and his precious border wall, the ridiculousness of his entire campaign is put into relief.
At the same time, the anti-Trump movement, which was particularly galvanized in Wisconsin, has been honing its message, seemingly to good effect.
In Wisconsin, Our Principles PAC, an anti-Trump group, spent $2 million and had a robust, across-the-board operation: television and digital ads, billboards, direct mail, phone calls, and absentee and get-out-the-vote programs.
So bring on the policy speeches—let's face it, Trump's statement about criminalizing abortion and punishing women was a gift to the Democratic party. And honestly, this could be the end of Trump. Not just because of the string of gaffes that are sure to ensue, but because policy was never his game.
