Received this e-mail today from U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren’s (D. MA) re-election campaign:
For 30+ years, the Republican Party has been trying to sell us snake oil. “Cut taxes for billionaires and giant corporations, and all of us will do better.” They repeat it in every interview, every press conference, and every bad tweet.
Do they think we’re dumb?
The tax plan that the Republicans are voting on this week is just another giant tax giveaway for corporations that are already making record profits. The megadonors who funded all those right-wing attack ads and elected a White House full of billionaires and bankers expect a return on their investment – and this tax plan is their big payoff.
If we’re going to stop them, we’re going to need people in Massachusetts and across the country to step up and fight back – the same way we defeated their “health care” bill just a few months ago.
Speak out now and let us know that you’re in this fight. Tell the Republicans not one penny in tax giveaways to the rich or big corporations.
This isn’t a middle-class tax plan – this is just one more round of rigging the system for the wealthiest Americans and giant corporations.
Here’s what the Republican tax bill actually does:
- Shovels $1.5 trillion in tax breaks to giant corporations;
- Gives gigantic tax cuts to super-rich families and heirs to family fortunes;
- Cuts tax deductions for people trying to pay their student loans, pay their medical bills, or buy a home – and could even RAISE taxes overall on lots of working families; and
- Adds trillions of dollars to the national debt – which Republicans will use as an excuse to slash Medicare, Medicaid, affordable housing, and education programs.
There’s a lot this country could do with an extra $1.5 trillion. We could rebuild our roads and bridges and put Americans to work in good paying jobs. We could end childhood poverty or figure out a way to help parents afford childcare. We could help young people crushed with student loan debt. We could invest it in medical research for autism, Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s. Heck, we could just write middle-class families a big fat check.
But Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell aren’t interested in working for working families – they’re interested in helping a handful of donors. It happens all the time: a handful of billionaires gather in fancy hotels, sip champagne, and threaten to withhold hundred of millions of dollars in donations to Republicans if they don’t deliver trillions in tax giveaways.
I know, it’s outrageous – but money slithers through Washington like a snake. And that’s why we have to fight this bill.
Democrats didn’t have the votes in the Senate to kill the health care bill, but we succeeded because people in Massachusetts and across the country fought tooth and nail to defend health care for millions of Americans.
As it stands right now, we don’t have the votes to defeat this tax bill – so it’s going to up to people like you again. It’s a fight we need to win.
Click here to draw a line in the sand now: not one penny in tax giveaways to the rich, not one penny in Medicaid or Medicare cuts, and not one penny in tax increases for working families across the country.
Thanks for being a part of this,
Elizabeth
