Perhaps you have already heard of the march, but I bring it up today because time is running out to raise money for things like permits and organizational costs. I did not realize that until today when I spent a hunk of my income tax return on a March For Science Portland sweatshirt, and discovered that there is only five days left in the Oregon fund raising campaign.
On Earth Day April 22nd scientists and supports of science throughout the world will demonstrate their passion for science and sound a call to support and safeguard the scientific community.
The March for Science champions robustly funded and publicly communicated science as a pillar of human freedom and prosperity. We unite as a diverse, nonpartisan group to call for science that upholds the common good and for political leaders and policy makers to enact evidence based policies in the public interest.
People who value science have remained silent for far too long in the face of policies that ignore scientific evidence and endanger both human life and the future of our world. New policies threaten to further restrict scientists’ ability to research and communicate their findings. We face a possible future where people not only ignore scientific evidence, but seek to eliminate it entirely. Staying silent is a luxury that we can no longer afford. We must stand together and support science.
Inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility are central to the mission and principles of the March for Science. Scientists and people who care about science are an intersectional group, embodying a diverse range of races, sexual orientations, gender identities, abilities, religions, ages, socioeconomic and immigration statuses. We, the march organizers, represent and stand in solidarity with historically underrepresented scientists and science advocates. We are united by our passion to pursue and share knowledge.
If you are just learning about the march today or have been considering participating in or supporting the march, today is a good day to join and donate or buy a shirt for the national or satellite marches. Even if you can’t donate, join the march on Earth Day April 22, 2017!
There are shirts for dozens and dozens of other local March For Science campaigns and I urge you to buy one from your local community, but here are a couple of few examples.
(You got to love the people from Philadelphia.)
