A bit quiet today in Backyard Science Bucket-land, so the sparrows have come out to scratch about and see what they can find. Now they can generally be tossed into the LBJ (little brown jobs) box, but there is a bit more variety if you look a bit more closely...
The House Sparrow is representative of the Passeridae, or Old World Sparrows. Forty or so species and the name group for perching birds (passerine) in general.
The Daily Bucket is a regular feature of the Backyard Science group. It is a place to note any observations you have made of the world around you. Insects, weather, meteorites, climate, birds and/or flowers. All are worthy additions to the bucket. Please let us know what is going on around you in a comment. Include, as close as is comfortable for you, where you are located. Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the patterns that are quietly unwinding around us.

The Song Sparrow is a New World Sparrow of family Emberizidae. They are actually more related to buntings than to the Old World sparrows. And the general “American Sparrow” group also includes some birds not called sparrows such as the Eastern Towhee. (Also in this group and commonly seen but not in my photo archive are the Chipping Sparrow and Dark-eyed Junco.)
The white-throated sparrow migrates through as compared to the house sparrow and song sparrow which are pretty much year-round residents in Philadelphia.
And the Sparrow will be back this Sunday as the Alphabet Bucket series continues with the “S” entry.
