June 2017
Well there is nothing spectacular going on in my backyard this month so I thought I would go back in time, back into the Image Library, and compare to what I see now.
- Curious about something you saw while walking in the woods? Spot the coolest bug ever? The prettiest flower and butterfly? Stumble on a rock and found a fossil? Or was it? This is the place to show your discoveries and share in the knowledge of the natural world right outside our doors. Join in the fun everyday at The Daily Bucket.
There are lots of flowers.
This pea vine still grows along the front fence.
I’m sure these Robber Flies are here, just not in sight of my iPhone.
This morning I was out pulling weeds for an hour and chopping back Poison Ivy from the trails. There is a lot of Virginia Snakeroot, tiny vine about 4-6” long with 1” leaves. This is the seed.
This snake was at Wolf Creek Trout Lily Preserve on our June volunteer workday. I missed the June day this year but I hope to see snakes like this in my backyard. I leave branches that appear sorta like this snake laying in the yard to remind me to look.
We did a burn at Ms Helen’s restored Longleaf Pine a year ago. Perfect timing for growing Wiregrass for seed. This year’s got put off to Jan-Feb 2018 to burn all the fuel we have been piling up in the new section.
There was Okra in my garden a year ago but I forgot to plant this year but...
but there is still this volunteer arugula that grows all thru the heat n’ humidity of a Florida summer — that, cherry tomatoes and hot peppers is about it.
and of course — Black Swallowtail caterpillars on Parsley. I remember watching this one slide down the stem ingesting as it went.
That’s all for now. Rain later of course, College World Series all week in Mid-June too. Go FSU but it really hurts to give away the first game to LSU on a play with 3 errors….
