I had a different topic in the queue for today’s Bucket but something came up, and I wasn’t able to assemble that one. However, so’s not to leave us with a Bucketless day, I’ll post a quick update of the eaglet I introduced to you a little over a week ago instead. (previous bucket: www.dailykos.com/...)
The Daily Bucket is a nature refuge. We amicably discuss animals, weather, climate, soil, plants, waters and note life’s patterns.
We invite you to note what you are seeing around you in your own part of the world, and to share your observations in the comments below.
Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the phenological patterns that are quietly unwinding around us. To have the Daily Bucket in your Activity Stream, visit Backyard Science’s profile page and click on Follow.

Salish Sea, Pacific Northwest
June 20, 2017
As you recall, I discovered the nest so recently the eaglet there is pretty big already. When I swing by to check on it every few days I wonder whether it will have flown the nest. For a week I saw nothing up there, or possibly a dark hump just above the edge, and no adults at all. However last week was incessantly rainy, and I thought perhaps it was just hunkered down.
Indeed it was still there! A couple of days ago the sky cleared in the afternoon, and while it was very windy, I was thrilled to see activity up there! Eagles don’t seem to mind wind.
For the first time I saw both adults, as you see in the title photo. We drove slowly along the road looking for the eaglet from another angle.
The food item was not a fish, nor a bird. The fluffy round shape of the bits flying off are more consistent with mammal fur. The light color suggests rabbit, but that’s as far as my speculation goes. Rabbits are extremely common in these parts though.
As we departed to leave them to their supper, one eagle called out. Anticipation for fresh rabbit, and hurry it up please? Warning off any nearby raptors thinking to steal it? or maybe just expressing joy on a beautiful sunny day high up in a nest? We never know what a day will bring….celebrate the good ones.
We’re having a spell of sunny weather now in the Pacific Northwest. Predicted to get unusually hot by the weekend. I’m heading down to the city today, where it will be at least ten degrees warmer than up here by the shore. However I’m going to stop by the heron rookery on the way, see if heron babies are still in their nests. I’ll have a report later.
Time for you to fill the bucket with your nature observations!
