As we celebrate freedom on July 4 and after a little more than two years of marriage equality in the United States (and with Germany joining the club just a few days ago!), it’s time for an update on the polling trends. It is, in retrospect, an amazing social and cultural shift that we have been lucky to see in our lifetimes.
Polling is no longer so frequent on the subject, now that the Supreme Court has weighed in. Three polls have been released in 2017 (Pew, Gallup, and PRRI), all with support for marriage equality above 60 percent, or about 30 points net support. While support did drop in the wake of the Supreme Court decision, it has since rebounded to new record highs. Support for marriage equality is even nearing a majority among Republicans.
It turns out that Fox News freakouts can’t compete with wedding invitations.
