There are only two groups in America that believe Donald Trump to have done the right thing in his Trump Tower speech defending white supremacist marchers: The so-called "alt-right" themselves, and their adamant far-right defenders.
In many ways the press conference was a rallying cry for the pro-Trump media, giving credence to the movement's talking point that factions of the left (specifically antifa) are intolerant and to blame for political violence.
Early reactions from places like Gateway Pundit and Breitbart heaped praise on the speech.
After a weekend that saw pro-Trump media figures on the defensive for the president's initial comments, some were exuberant after Trump's Tuesday press conference.
Among those praising Trump: White supremacist David Duke. White nationalist "alt-right" founder Richard Spencer. Notorious pro-Trump trolls Michael Cernovich and Jack Posobiec.
There shouldn't be much question on this. If those that wave Confederate and Nazi flags and shout about the dangers of "the Jews" believe you, because of your deeds or words, to be an ally to their side, you are indeed their ally. If they believe they have common ground with you: They do.
America's biggest hatemongers are declaring victory tonight because Trump did precisely what they wanted him to do: blame the rally's violence, including a terrorist attack on counterprotesters, on their opponents.
As for why obsessively conservative outlets like Breitbart or "Gateway Pundit" are thumping on the same drum, well, we can draw our own conclusions. Most of the rest of the country is largely aghast at what we just witnessed.
