Received this e-mail today from State Senator Steve Farley’s (D. AZ) gubernatorial campaign:
Friends,
Trump is using his power to play politics with Arizona’s justice system.
Presidential pardons are to be reserved for special instances, not to stop racist criminals from serving time for their crimes.
But President Trump is “seriously considering” a Presidential pardon for Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who was convicted of violating a court order as a sheriff in Maricopa County, Arizona. He continued to use illegal racial profiling tactics to target immigrants around Arizona in defiance of a federal judge.
As a sheriff for 24 years, Arpaio continually chose his own right-wing, racist agenda over the law, bringing shame to our great state of Arizona.
This is outrageous. A pardon from Trump would be an official endorsement of blatant racism by the White House.
Add your name to the petition and join the fight against clear cut racism by our President.
President Trump cannot be allowed to interfere with the Arizona justice system. The American people deserve to know that those who blatantly disregard the law will be held accountable. Perhaps that is something President Trump should pause to consider.
Law enforcement agencies around our country rely on public trust to keep our streets safe. When our officials are found guilty of crimes that violate public trust, they must be held accountable.
I am running for governor of Arizona and am calling out Trump. I will not sit idly by and allow the President to pardon his racist friends and ignore our legal system. Will you join me?
Add your name and tell President Trump: NO PARDONS for racists.
Keep up the fight,
Steve
