Some more good news out of Virginia today regarding next year’s U.S. Senate race:
The first statewide poll of the 2018 Senate race, released today, suggests Prince William Board of Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart faces an uphill battle in his effort to unseat U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine.
Registered voters surveyed favored Kaine (D) over Stewart by a 53 to 36 percent margin, according to a survey of 1,000 registered Virginia voters conducted earlier this month by the University of Mary Washington.
The poll showed Kaine with similar double-digit leads over other possible Republican contenders, including Congressmen Dave Brat, whose 7th District stretches from suburban Richmond to Culpeper, and Scott Taylor, who represents the 2nd District, which includes much of Hampton Roads.
Those surveyed favored Kaine 54 to 36 percent against Brat and 52 to 37 percent against Taylor.
So far, Stewart, R-At Large, is the only Republican who has officially entered the race.
But the survey found that slightly more respondents said they favored Taylor as the Republican candidate, with 20 percent picking Taylor, 12 percent favoring Stewart and 9 percent supporting Brat. Others said they were undecided, according to a UMW press release issued Wednesday morning.
The survey found the Republicans suffer from limited name recognition statewide.
