Donald Trump was asked whether he would be issuing a temporary waiver of the Jones Act so that non-U.S. flagged ships can assist in the emergency efforts to bring food, water, fuel, and other supplies to Puerto Rico in the wake of the catastrophic destruction of Hurricane Maria. He issued waivers after hurricanes hit Texas and Florida—and Puerto Rico's situation is far more dire.
His response: No. Because the shipping industry doesn't want that:
President Donald Trump told reporters Wednesday he was considering waiving the act but hesitated because “a lot of people that work in the shipping industry... don’t want the Jones Act lifted.”
