Received this e-mail today from Rep. Michelle Lujan Girsham’s (D. NM) gubernatorial campaign:
The cutoff for Congress to find a sensible, humane solution for DREAMers is today. I am tired of the Republicans saying we have until March to find a solution. Each day Congress delays acting, countless DREAMers are in fear of losing their DACA protection.
We don’t have much time before Republicans shut down the government, but let me take a minute to remind you who we’re actually fighting for. First of all, and most important, we’re talking about real people. Real people who are doctors, educators and members of our armed forces. Not numbers. Not faceless ranks of political chess pieces. Real people who have built real lives here against all odds – like Isaac, who I met last summer. Isaac's parents brought him to New Mexico for a better life and worked as janitors to provide for him. And Yuridia, who I met in 2013 and has since been able to attend college and get a job. When she was sexually assaulted at school, her DACA status is what gave Yuridia the courage to report the assault without fear of being deported.
This is why I'm fighting, why I'm rallying, and, yes, why I'm crashing meetings at the White House that I and my colleagues in the Congressional Hispanic Caucus were senselessly shut out of. Because people like Yuridia and Isaac are counting on us to protect the lives they have fought for, tooth and nail. They deserve dignity.
So here's what Isaac, Yuridia, the nearly 700,000 other DREAMers and I need from you. We need you to tell Republicans that it is their moral imperative to take action now, not to shut down the government, but to protect DREAMers and their families. Click here to add your name. Tell Congress: Act now, do not shut down the government, it is time to protect DREAMers. Are you with me?
Thank you,
Michelle
