Veteran and Army Attorney James Mackler (D. TN) dropped out of the Democratic primary in the US. Senate race to succeed outgoing U.S. Senator Bob Corker (R. TN), clearing the path for former Governor Phil Bredesen (D. TN). While Mackler may not be a candidate, he is still playing a big role in this year’s midterm elections by launching a new Super PAC aimed to help Democrats win a Senate majority. Here’s the e-mail I received from Mackler on behalf of his new PC, Believe In Service:
I believe in service.
Service builds character, allows young people to meet and work with a diverse group of people, gives us all a stake in our communities, and can help pay for higher education.
Service to others has given me invaluable experiences all over the world, from search and rescue operations in the Colorado Rockies, to the courtroom fighting unfair sentencing guidelines for indigent clients as a public defender, to flying Blackhawks in Iraq in service to our country.
And yet, public service is under attack.
As someone who paid off my student loans with combat pay from Iraq, I cannot stand by while national service programs are attacked by anti-service extremists like Marsha Blackburn - who voted to end AmeriCorps - and her colleagues who are now targeting public service student loan forgiveness.
Believe in Service, a political action committee built with the help of supporters like you, is donating directly to candidates running against anti-service extremists. Today, we endorsed and made maximum contributions to U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin (WI), Governor Phil Bredesen (TN), U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (OH), U.S. Senator Bill Nelson (FL), U.S. Rep. Jacky Rosen (NV), U.S. Rep. Kyrsten Sinema (AZ), U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow (MI), and U.S. Senator Jon Tester (MT).
Unlike anti-service extremists, voters do not view national service as a partisan issue. 83% want Congress to maintain or increase federal spending on national service programs, including 78% of Republicans, 84% of Independents and 90% of Democrats.
Economists have found that each dollar invested in national service generates $3.95 in terms of higher earnings, increased output and other community benefits.
Please join me on this new and important mission and visit our website at www.BelieveInService.com.
Thank you,
James
