The US is torpedoing the UN efforts for a ceasefire in Yemen
From CNN Yesterday:
The US has "slammed the brakes on" a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for a limited ceasefire and increased humanitarian aid in Yemen over concerns about angering Saudi Arabia, two sources tell CNN.
...
The reason for the delay continues to be a White House worry about angering Saudi Arabia, which strongly opposes the resolution, multiple sources say. CNN reported earlier this month that the Saudi crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, "threw a fit" when presented with an early draft of the document, leading to a delay and further discussions among Western allies on the matter.
This in response to a UN report that 400,000 CHILDREN in Yemen are at risk of dying.
The United Nations calls Yemen the worst humanitarian and security crisis in the world. It warns 14 million people, or one half of the population, are on the brink of famine. The main casualties are the children.
Before the war, the country had one of the highest rates of malnutrition in the world. Since the Saudi-led coalition began its campaign of airstrikes against Houthi rebels in support of the government in March 2015, malnutrition levels have soared.
The U.N. children’s fund warns 400,000 children under age five are suffering from severe acute malnutrition and are at risk of dying.
However, apparently the White House only cares about princes throwing fits, and the “Party of Life” and “Family Values” is all too happy to let 400,000 babies and pre-schoolers in Yemen die of starvation (that is, if the US made weapons sold to Saudi Arabia don’t get hem first).
So, let me get this straight all of you enablers of this White House who cry like the world is ending because a women aborts a 16 week old fetus or a gay couple wants to adopt a baby:
Because some self-appointed royalty throws a fit, and because Trump owes a bunch of really awful people money, you’re more than happy to look the other way as the US Government literally blocks the UN from preventing nearly ½ million children from dying.
I wrote my Senators and Congressional Representative last night, asking that they sponsor legislation in Congress for the US to support the UN Resolution.
UPDATE:
From the Comments, SandraLLAP, shared this petition from Win Without War, endorsing a bipartisan Senate Joint Resolution 54, introduced by Sanders (I-VT), Lee (R-UT), and Murphy (D-CT)
It’s currently tabled, I think, but here’s the roll call vote to find out how your senators voted, as well as recommended language for a letter.
Dear Senators,
As your constituent in your state, I urge you to vote YES on S.J.Res. 54, the Yemen War Powers Resolution introduced by Senators Bernie Sanders, Mike Lee, and Chris Murphy. This privileged resolution would end U.S. military involvement in the disastrous Saudi and Emirati-led war in Yemen that has put 14 million people at risk of famine. The Senate will take up this resolution as soon as Tuesday, November 27. Please vote YES to end U.S. military support for this horrific war and humanitarian crisis.
Sincerely,
