Received this e-mail today from U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D. NJ):
This week I joined Democratic and Republican colleagues on the Senate floor to try and advance our bipartisan bill to protect Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russia’s attack on our democracy — but, once again, this bipartisan effort to protect the Special Counsel’s investigation was struck down by Republican Senate leadership.
With President Trump’s longtime attorney Michael Cohen pleading guilty this week to new charges as a result of the investigation — and President Trump himself continuing a days-long streak of directly attacking the Special Counsel — it’s never been more urgent for us to vote on and pass this critical legislation.
We must take immediate action, which is why I’m asking you to become a citizen co-sponsor of the Special Counsel Independence and Integrity Act. Read on to hear why this is so crucial, or click here to add your name →
Senate Republican leadership has consistently refused to bring the Special Counsel Independence and Integrity Act to the floor for a vote, even though it has bipartisan support in the Senate and already passed in the Judiciary Committee.
Just this week, Senator Mitch McConnell affirmed this position and said he will reject any attempt to bring forward our bipartisan legislation. And despite the president’s escalating threats to the Special Counsel’s investigation suggesting otherwise, McConnell told reporters “the president is not going to fire Robert Mueller.”
It’s clear we can’t trust President Trump to protect the Special Counsel’s investigation, which is why it’s critical that the Senate immediately pass the Special Counsel Independence and Integrity Act. Sign on if you agree →
Robert Mueller’s investigation has already produced significant results — more than 190 total criminal charges, 7 guilty pleas, and 3 people sentenced — but President Trump continues to discredit the investigation as a “witch hunt” and appoint officials who have demonstrated animosity towards the Special Counsel.
The American people deserve to know the exact extent of Russian interference in the 2016 election. If Mueller is fired, we may never get the answers we deserve, hold those responsible accountable, or have the knowledge we need to prevent future attacks on our electoral process.
My bipartisan legislation would protect the integrity of the investigation and prevent a constitutional crisis, but even now, Senate Republican leadership refuses to take action.
Stand with me and demand that Congress protect the Mueller investigation by passing the Special Counsel Independence and Integrity Act.
We’ve seen how public pressure can make a real difference. That’s why I’m asking you to stand up and take action so we can prevent a constitutional crisis and get the answers we deserve.
