I tried to log in to Twitter this morning and found my credentials were no longer being accepted. The email account attached to it revealed the problem: someone had changed my password.
I found further evidence of tampering when I tried to reset my password and was informed that I’d made too many reset attempts.
I can’t prove that a right-wing gremlin did this, but I find the timing suspicious. It happened right after I posted a handful of anti-Trump tweets, the only ones that I’d ever used this account to post.
That’s not the scariest part, though. The scariest part is that I was using a 20 character, randomly generated password and an email account that I used only for signing up for Twitter, which I also protected with a randomly generated password. It didn’t matter. I made only a handful of anti-Trump posts and I may have been targeted anyway.
Keep a close eye on the activity on your social media accounts. If you can, opt to be notified of failed login attempts and attempts to change your password.
Also, stay tuned for updates on efforts to get my account back and what was done with it while it was out of my control.
Update: Twitter sent me a link to the very same password reset page that previously told me I had exceeded my maximum reset attempts. It’s still giving me the same result. Will try to penetrate their incompetent tech support via email.
