Utah joins the States of Michigan and Wisconsin as Republican legislators in all three states blatantly disregard the will of the people they had promised to serve and represent.
My discussion here refers only to Utah’s Republican legislators.
Utah Proposition 2, the Medical Marijuana Initiative was on the ballot in Utah as an initiated state statute on November 6, 2018. It was approved.
Just a few scant days after Utah’s Proposition #2 was approved by a majority of Utah’s voters, Republican legislators destroyed that proposition and replaced it with legislation previously approved by the LDS Church. They rushed it thru with remarkable speed (even faster than Michigan and Wisconsin Republicans), the governor signed it into immediate law.
There was not a single embarrassed, ashamed, guilty, uncomfortable look by any of Utah’s Republicans for the contempt they showed the people of Utah.
Indeed, the contempt all of Utah's Republican legislators have been clearly shown over the past several years with the
(1) Forced and Unnecessary move of the Utah State Prison (so that developers and real estate agents entwined with the Legislature can make obscene personal profits with the land vacated by the prison),
(2) Punishing the 'Democratic' people of Salt Lake City and County by forcing the new prison to be placed in Salt Lake County, and furthermore, to ensure massive cost overruns by decreeing (contrary to the expressed will of the people) the new prison be placed in both a very inappropriate location, as well as inappropriate soil foundation which is currently unable to host the new prison without massive and costly remediation,
(3) Refusal to expand Medicare for several years to help the poor, elderly and ill people of Utah (again, contrary to the wishes of the majority of Utah's citizens,
(4) Deliberately creating extremely difficult procedures and policies to discourage citizen's initiatives,
(5) and, of course, many other undertakings the Legislature has done behind closed doors which are too numerous to elaborate on.
Because the Legislature has been so successful in ignoring Utah's citizens, they have now blessed us all with what the LDS Church desires - the destruction of Proposition #2.
Utah Proposition 4, the Independent Redistricting Commission Initiative, was on the ballot in Utah as an initiated state statute on November 6, 2018. It was approved.
Proposition #4 is next to be nullified, just wait and see.
