With fourth of July in the middle of the week this year, the box office is taking a bit of a breather, as major studios are rolling out films that no one expects to be major box office blockbusters. Films like “Uncle Drew” and “Sicario” have their own audience, for sure, but are unlikely to be box office monsters at the ticket office.
Last year, many believed the age of at home media options, Netflix and HBO would keep more people at home instead of in front of the big screen. This year, though, has changed that projection significantly. According to Deadline.Com
How much? For the period of April 27 through July 1, the summer box office is actually $2.7 billion, a raging 28% ahead of the same period a year ago, and –get this– it’s already 8% ahead of 2013 over the same period. By a late April’s start date, this summer’s box office is headed toward an all-time record.
Movie-going is not dead, as the Wall Street media falsely prophesied last summer. It is not going the way of print media. It’s a product-driven business. There’s no precise measure of admissions in place at movie theaters across the nation, so it’s false to write that admissions are down. As AMC boss Adam Aron says, “We don’t bank bodies, we bank dollars.”
Uncle Drew, a film based on a series of Pepsi commercials by Kyle Irving, will finish in 4th this weekend, following Jurassic World, Incredibles 2, and Sicario 2. Still, the film is such a low budget production the studio might be happy.
Sicario 2 is a unique vehicle for one reason: Josh Brolin. No actor anywhere is having the kind of summer that Josh Brolin is having. Beyond starting in Sicario 2, he played Thanos in Avengers and Cable in Deadpool 2. The success of Sicario could live Brolin with an unbelievably rare trifecta — an incredible box office result from three different films.
On TV
We are down to two episodes left on Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, which will air the last episode before the season finale Wednesday. Don’t worry, Netflix is dropping a ton of holiday viewing on Friday!
Anne with an e: complete second season; comedians in cars getting coffee, 10th season, Free Rein: 2nd Season; special: inside the world's toughest prisons: season 2 all make show up on the streaming service Friday.
If you’re like many, you might still be catching up on your DVR. And, if like most of us, you followed Westworld, you might still be confused. If you feel as though you can’t get over being lost, check out ThisInsider’s guide to make sense of the twisty HBO series.
In Music
We’re in a truly slow week with major record labels on releases; but before we got under way — Drake managed to rock the music world with the release of his album “Scorpion” which broke the single day streaming record, digital sales record, and Spotify streaming record.
Love him or hate him, Drake apparently has the fourth of July week to himself for music.
What’s on tap in your house this week?
