Set your schedule to have CBS on at 9:30 on September 27.
That will mark the return of Candice Bergen as Murphy Brown, for at least 13 Episodes.
Given how large the audience was for the reboot of Roseanne, I think we can expect a similar — if not larger — audience for the premiere.
The star, now 71, will reprise her role as the very feminist host of a TV show, now a Cable TV morning show.
She is co-executive producer with the show’s originator, Diane English.
CBS announced in January that it was going to revive the show. I suspect news since them has given the writers/producer/actors a lot of material with which to work.
The show won multiple Emmy (and other awards), including something like 7 for Bergen herself. It was nominated for a total of 62 Emmies.
It is intended to address contemporary issues, including “fake news” and #metoo.
The original did as well, including Murphy Brown dealing with a pregnancy while a prominent single woman, and also pushing back against Dan Quayle’s criticism:
If this is a successful reboot — and I think it will be for those remembering the original, which ran from 1988 to 1998, which means a large part of the audience is likely to be educated, older white women — I would suggest it might have some impact upon the election, especially if as I suspect the early shows skewer Trump and he cannot resist rage-tweeting. Even if it were only to add 2-3% to Democratic totals, that could result in swinging as many as a dozen House seats and possibly even a Senate seat or Governor’s race.
I have penciled in the date and time on my calendar.
