Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by and tell us about your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper. Newcomers may notice that many who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well.
Did you know that Freddie Mercury used to be a baggage handler at London’s Heathrow Airport? I didn’t. But apparently he worked there before he Brian May and Roger Taylor formed the rock group, Queen. With Queen, he was responsible for many songs that are now modern classics, songs that have continued to be part of popular culture long after the singer’s tragic death at far too young an age (he was only 45) from AIDS. You could say in his time, Freddie Mercury was outside the dominant culture in Britain both as a member of an ethnic minority and in lifestyle. Yet he made his edgy musical art so popular that it became mainstream and remains very, very beloved. Talk about showmanship! Not to mention talent. And that voice! As noted in Wikipedia,
The Who lead singer Roger Daltrey called Mercury "the best virtuoso rock 'n' roll singer of all time. He could sing anything in any style. He could change his style from line to line and, God, that's an art. And he was brilliant at it.
There will be a biopic movie about his life opening in November.
This past Wednesday would have been Freddie Mercury’s 72nd birthday. To commemorate this and to honor his memory, the baggage handlers at Heathrow staged a little event. I offer it to you as a way to start the weekend with a smile. And maybe some dancing?
Come in, be comfortable, and share your day, your weekend plans, your menus with friends. This is an open thread.
