With the House under Democratic control, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell plans on doing the minimum necessary in terms of legislation while using the Senate's time to jam as many of Donald Trump’s judicial nominees into office in the next two years as humanly possible. To that end, all those Republican senators who still bitch about that time Harry Reid made it easier to get President Obama's nominees through are getting ready to change the rules again for the Russian asset in the White House.
They've already eliminated the 60-vote majority for Supreme Court Justices, so there's no barrier to getting Trump's horrible nominees into office. The only obstacle now is time, so that's what they're going to try to cut down: the 30 hours of debate any senator can demand on a nominee. Senate Rules Chairman Roy Blunt of Missouri is getting ready to make the change, and says if he doesn't find Democrats willing to go along with it, he's ready to go "nuclear" and do it with a simple majority of Republicans. "We're going to deal with this issue, I think," he told Politico. "We're going to try it [bipartisan] and I think our Republican members would want to see an effort ... and we would want that to be a genuine effort. So, let's see."
At the least, they'd put in the change for executive and lower-level district court nominees. There are currently 121 district court vacancies, thanks in large part to McConnell's refusal to allow so many of Obama's nominees to advance. Democrats would be able to do little to stop this onslaught. There's not much fear among Republicans in the potential harm to them if they do it. They'll have already jam-packed the courts with their deplorables, so even if the next Senate and president are Democratic, there won't be many vacancies to fill.
Since Republicans did decide to go nuclear on the Supreme Court, it seems pretty unlikely that they'd get all squeamish about this change, however much they supposedly venerate the institution. Which means what Democrats need to be thinking about and preparing for now is figuring out how to mitigate it, whether that means court restructuring or figuring out how to impeach a big slew of illegitimate nominees from an illegitimate president.
