Its that time once again friends, when the most despicable and deplorable out there learn the harsh and heady truth, the truth that Monday is always coming. The reckoning is at hand, but it is not my place to judge. For I am merely the messenger of fate and providence.
Yeah, if you just string random stuff together you too can sound deep and profound. I’m a college educated writer. I know these things. Anyway, welcome to the Monday Good News Roundup. Lets begin wont we?
California’s governor, Gavin Newsom, signed into law on Friday a statewide ban on private prisons, in a move likely to set off another legal battle between the Trump administration and California.
The new law prohibits California’s prison authority from contracting with private companies to jail criminal detainees and requires the state to phase out existing contracts by 2028. The ban also applies to companies that hold immigrant detainees for the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.
A big win for California, and setting up for another big loss for Trump. Go get em Mr. Newsom.
According to a report from Politico, Democratic leaders are working with grassroots organizations to reach out to disaffected voters in an effort to drum up more support for the impeachment of President Donald Trump.
The report notes that the public was ahead of the Democratic leadership in their demand the president be brought to account for multiple crimes committed by the president while in office, but now top Democrats who urged caution and seeing the light and working with various groups.
The Dems are working hard to turn the tide of public opinion against Trump (Not that they needed to everyone hates that guy), and we’re going to drag him from the white house kicking and screaming.
mpeachment can’t be “unconstitutional” because it’s spelled out in the Constitution, Fox News host Chris Wallace said Friday, responding to remarks that former GOP House Speaker Newt Gingrich had made earlier on Fox.
Besides, Gingrich presumably didn’t believe it was unconstitutional when he led an impeachment effort, Wallace noted to “America’s Newsroom” anchor Sandra Smith
Even Fox news is tired of the GOP’s nonsense. And if they lose Fox News, its pretty much over for them.
ith each passing day, President Trump flaunts his great and unmatched wisdom and so invites us to play armchair, arm’s-length therapists. So let me float an untested theory about what is unfolding before our eyes. And then let’s test it.
What if the president wants out? There’s much about the job he never liked, which is one reason he spends so much time watching TV rather than actually doing it. Under normal circumstances, it involves any number of things he once avoided; shaking hands with germy people, being talked at by experts who know more than he, sitting still for extended periods, being criticized no matter what he does, empathizing — all important parts of the job. He has gone to considerable lengths to reshape the role, fired the experts, cleared his schedule, kept up his golf game … but still. The campaigning was fun, but the best evidence of how little he likes presiding is how seldom he’s actually done it.
Seems to be a problem with a great deal of the GOP isn’t it? They like winning, but they hate doing the work that goes with it. Hey guys, why don’t you just boot up Civilization 5 and play that. No one cares if you screw up that world.
Speaking of video games, this last story is going to be a bit weird, but keep with me.
he reaction to yesterday's news that Blizzard suspended Hearthstone player Chung "Blitzchung" Ng Waifor expressing pro-Hong Kong views has been, well, pretty severe. Posts criticising Blizzard have been all over Reddit and Twitter, while the incident has even broken into mainstream consciousness, with Republican and Democratic politicians alike calling out the decision.
On r/HongKong, meanwhile, things have taken a rather more proactive turn, as multiple posts have appeared seeking to turn Overwatch's Mei into a Hong Kong protest symbol.
"It would be such a shame if Mei from Overwatch became a pro-democracy symbol and got Blizzard's games banned in China," reads one such post. "Let's get back at Blizzard by making Mei a pro-democracy symbol!", says a popular tweet.
Okay here is the breakdown. Last week, Blizzard entertainment banned Blitzchung, a Hearthstone (An online card game, think Magic the Gathering) for showing support of the Hong Kong Protests on a stream, as well as confiscating his prize money and firing two interviewers on stream with him. This lead to a massive backlash, with many people, myself included, boycotting Blizzard games in protest (Although some of us did relent a bit when Blizzard semi reversed the decision by reducing Blitzchung’s ban sentence and giving his money back). In retaliation, some people have decided to turn Mei, a character in Overwatch and the games only Chinese character, into an icon of the Hong Kong Protest, in an effort to get China to ban the game (Which is entirely possible, remember their leader is the guy who banned Winnie the Pooh because people were using an image of the bear to mock him). And so far it seems to have firmly taken hold. I know probably no one cares about this but me, but its just nice to see the reaction to this being so strong and uniformly against Blizzard for supporting an authoritarian regime. (Also Mei in the game is a climate scientist with an ice gun fighting global warming, so she’d totally be pro Hong Kong.)
Well, the ol clock on the wall says its time to pack up for the week. Stay strong and stay frost. And enjoy the GNR Spotify playlist. See you in a week.
