The media have their narrative about the Democrats being on shaky ground, because the media always have a narrative about Democrats being on shaky ground, but a new poll suggests something else:
A majority of voters approve of the House of Representatives’ impeachment of President Donald Trump earlier this week, according to a new POLITICO/Morning Consult poll conducted in the immediate aftermath of the vote.
Politico reports it as a narrow majority, but it's actually a pretty solid 52-43. The breakdown is, off course, highly partisan, but most significanly, Independents favor impeachment 48-41. And the media really might want to pay attention to this:
But public opinion on whether to actually remove Trump from office is virtually identical: Fifty-two percent would approve of the Senate voting to convict Trump, while 42 percent would disapprove.
A ten point majority favors removing Trump from office! Democrats are on the right path, demanding a legitimate trial:
A majority of poll respondents, 54 percent, agree the Senate should call witnesses in the trial “because some White House staff refused to testify” during the House’s impeachment inquiry — twice the 27 percent who say the Senate shouldn’t call witnesses “because the relevant testimony and evidence was brought forth” during the House inquiry.
That’s a huge majority, and Democrats need to keep hammering the message: Trump and the Republicans are obstructing justice, and they’re clearly afraid of witnesses.
Why?
