I don’t have too much to say here. I’ve wept for our democracy today. I’ve also wept recently for personal reasons. And I can say from those personal experiences that sometimes it is really hard to be brave. You put yourself out there, raw. You tell the truth, not knowing if you will be believed. It is a world that rewards the liars. They skate by, for the most part. If you stand up to them, they lie some more. And they’re good at it. They’re convincing. People want to believe them — smart people — because we are all wired to trust. Liars surround themselves with their believers and it can feel like you’re alone facing a mob. When you confront liars with the truth, they want to destroy you, and you may end up being destroyed by them. Their motive for revenge can be relentless.
Yet — truth is all that matters at the end of the day.
Trump does not give one whit for truth. The folks surrounding him, who weren’t willing to lie for him, have resigned. About 30% of this country doesn’t care about his lies and will still support him even if he shoots their firstborn on 5th Avenue, as long as he hates the same people they hate, owns the libs and cuts taxes.
But there are times when what is right is not just calling out to you. It is pleading with you. It is smacking you desperately in the face.
That is what Mueller did today with his report, even with Barr’s redactions: his impeachment roadmap.
And in moments when what is right hits you in the face like this, you set aside worries about losing, about the angry mob, about everything. You focus on what is right, what is just. And you proceed.
Knowing it will be the hardest thing you’ll ever do. But doing it anyway.
This, today, is the dilemma the Democratic Party faces. Will we stand up? Will we do what needs to be done? Are we brave enough to not check the polls before we act?
Can we pledge to America to be the warriors of truth?
Or will we find ourselves named complicit in the history books.
