Here are a few of the “Top ten takeaways” that some reporters managed to glean from the Mueller Report in the hours after its long anticipated release — redacted and delayed, as it intentionally was for their ‘Totally Exonerated’ effect ...
Long-awaited document presents findings from special counsel’s two-year probe
• Trump ordered former White House counsel to have Mueller fired.
• Trump "repeatedly" asked intelligence leaders to state he had no ties to Russia.
• Mueller says "substantial" evidence supports Comey's version of Flynn's firing over Trump's account.
• But it did not clear Trump of obstructing justice for seeking to stymy the probe.
• Trump feared for his job.
• Mueller's findings emphasize that while his team will not determine one way or another on matters of obstruction, it is Congress' duty to ensure criminal law applies to all persons -- including the president.
I would add to that list of bullet-point “takeaways” from the Mueller Report, these other important Mueller factoids:
• Manafort briefed [Russian agent] Kilimnik on the state of the Trump Campaign and Manafort's plan to win the election.
• Gates periodically sent such polling data to Kilimnik during the campaign.
• [The Kilimnik briefing] included discussion of "battleground" states, which Manafort identified as Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota.
And few more Mueller “finding of facts” — that you will never see reported on Fox news:
• The President then directed Porter to tell McGahn to create a record to make clear that the President never directed McGahn to fire the Special Counsel.
• The next day, the President asked Priebus to have McFarland draft an internal email that would confirm that the President did not direct Flynn to call the Russian Ambassador about sanctions.
• [Trump] told Christie, that terminating Flynn would end “the whole Russia thing.”
Among the more ‘obscure’ — but extremely urgent — findings of the Mueller Report are listed next. These evidentiary conclusions should be sounding national alarms from coast to coast, as Robert Mueller himself tried to do (among other things), in his last news conference:
• Two military units of the GRU carried out the computer intrusions into the Clinton Campaign, DNC, and DCCC: [...using ] specialized malicious software [and] large-scale spearphishing campaigns.
• In addition to targeting individuals involved in the Clinton Campaign, GRU officers also targeted individuals and entities involved in the administration of the elections. Victims included U.S. state and local entities, such as state boards of elections (SBOEs), secretaries of state, and county governments, as well as individuals who worked for those entities.
• The GRU also targeted private technology firms responsible for manufacturing and administering election-related software and hardware, such as voter registration software and electronic polling stations.[187] The GRU continued to target these victims through the elections in November 2016.
Interestingly and importantly, Mueller could not establish clear charges of Collusion, because members of the Trump Campaign team actively lied, deleted records, and otherwise obstructed their Investigation:
• the [Special Counsel] Office learned that some of the individuals we interviewed or whose conduct we investigated — including some associated with the Trump Campaign — deleted relevant communications or communicated during the relevant period using applications that feature encryption or that do not provide for long-term retention of data or communications records.
• the investigation established that several individuals affiliated with the Trump Campaign lied to the Office, and to Congress, about their interactions with Russian-affiliated individuals and related matters. Those lies materially impaired the investigation of Russian election interference. The Office charged some of those lies as violations of the federal false-statements statute.
All this amounts to the bottom-line conclusion from Mueller, as noted in the opening article:
• Mueller's findings emphasize that while his team will not determine one way or another on matters of obstruction, it is Congress' duty to ensure criminal law applies to all persons -- including the president.
And results in the executive summary conclusion of the Mueller Report itself:
This report … does not exonerate him.
Perhaps more telling than the whole lot of it, were the knowingly guilty-mindset conclusions of the Chief Executive himself, upon hearing that a Special Counsel investigation was being launched against him:
“Oh my God. This is terrible. This is the end of my Presidency. I’m fucked.”
From the career Conman’s lips — to Congress’ ears …
These ongoing abuses of power shall not stand. Not on our watch.
