Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share a virtual kitchen table with other readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by to talk about music, your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper…. Newcomers may notice that many who post in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table and hope to make some new friends as well.
Please do not attack Democratic candidates or drag primary fights into our community.
I came across a memento of college in a drawer...thought I would share it with the DK community.
I studied political science at HSU in the late 1970s. This button was practically de rigeur among my fellow students in those days. This was the official button of the Redwood Alliance, the group that protested the building of nuclear power plants in Northern California. But the button’s message is timeless. And it isn’t limited to one social grievance.
As we wait upon the Senate’s deliberation in these tense times, my thoughts go back to my political science studies — one topic in particular. Even in the late seventies, books were being written about whether oligarchy or democracy is stronger. I would expect that it is still a subject of study. Who knew that 2020 would be the year when this would all come to a head in such a horrible way.
My personal hopes for democracy prevailing over vested interests lie with all our generations — but particularly with the one that is coming of age now. The Parkland students and Greta Thunberg are shining examples. What happens next will matter most to them for they will be living with the ramifications much longer than many of us will..
For a look back at societal change brought about by young people (and what is now old school cool), have a look at this documentary by Sir Michael Caine, My Generation. You can stream it on Amazon Prime.
The weekend begins now. Please come in, be comfortable, and share your day, your weekend plans, your menus! This is an open thread.
