THIS IS THE NEW ROMANCE
“Black Cat Music started out at the "practice pad" downtown Oakland where the Criminals had a room, and a bunch of other bands at that time. Dan McComas had left the Criminals, but we remained close friends. We started playing with some songs we'd been writing separately that were in a weirder place than the Criminals could get to. My taste in music had kind of changed by that point as well, I was getting into a lot of darker, more theatrical stuff that didn't necessarily gel with the Criminals. Travis and Jon I'd known from around Gilman. I just remember it sounded really tight right off the bat, we had a kind of a buzz about us, and we were all that age where you think you can set fires with your eyes, so we probably acted the part.” — Brady Baltezore (the Criminals, Black Cat Music)

'Lloyd, I Would’ve Done the Same’ (1998)

I first witnessed Black Cat Music at Epicenter Zone (16th & Valencia, SF) sometime during 1998. Seven songs in twenty minutes. Great presence and energy. I was floored. I became friends with one of the members and saw them live countless times over the next few years. Can’t recall seeing them have an off night. ‘This Is The New Romance' was written and recorded during the first year the group was together.

‘Wine in a Box’ (1998)

Jet black hair. Eisenhower jackets, pegged Dickies pants, Converse shoes. I rocked that style for years. Many talented, creative people in the East Bay then (now too I’m sure). A lot of the hard stuff going around that scene, de rigueur perhaps — a haiku:
All black everything
Young, beautiful and reckless
Swagger boom swagger
