The current move toward "social distancing" has me remembering a science fiction book I read back in high school. The Naked Sun by Isaac Asimov.
The story is about a colony planet that had been settled by a bunch of well to do and high tech colonists. The colony was small in numbers but widely spread across the planet. Everyone lived on large estates and interacted with each other electronically, visiting through holographic images. It became embarrassing, then repulsive, to be in the actual physical presence of another person. They were a fairly tight knit community, but it was all through electronic interactions.
The plot was that there had been a murder and a detective from Earth was brought in because they didn't have police on this planet and no one can conceive of actually being in the same room with someone in order to murder them. But the real story was just an exploration of what it would be like to live in a world with no physical contact and only electronic relationships with other people. So here we go… Check it out.
