I Got The News Today (IGTNT), which is one of the oldest continuous series on Daily Kos, provides members of this community a venue to pay their respects to those who have died as a result of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as in Operation Freedom’s Sentinel, Operation Inherent Resolve, Operation Resolute Support, Operation Joint Guardian and Operation Octave Shield. The IGTNT title is a reminder that far too often the family of an active duty service member receives the terrible news that their beloved has died.
Sgt. Christopher Wesley Curry
The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Inherent Resolve. Sgt. Christopher Wesley Curry, 23, from Terre Haute, Indiana, died May 4, 2020 in Erbil, Iraq, from a non-combat-related incident. The incident is under investigation. Curry was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Wainwright, Alaska. ~ Dod News Release
Christopher “Chris” Curry graduated from Terre Haute North Vigo High School in 2014 and enlisted in the Army in 2015. It was not surprising that Curry would choose to enlist since both of his brothers are in the Army and his father retired from a 22 year career in the Army. In fact, his family has a long history of service to their nation dating back to the Revolutionary War.
Bringing Sgt Christopher Wesley Curry home from Dover Air Force Base will be a family affair according to his father, Michael Curry. "My son that's stationed in Germany will be part of the escort detail to bring him back and then my other son who's in North Carolina is coming up to Indiana. He'll go to Dover with us and then my two sons will bring Christopher home."
Mr. Curry spoke to WTHI-TV10 about his son and the family’s devastating loss."We're still dealing with it and in disbelief. Being in the military, I have lost friends who I consider family. I never thought it would hit home like it has. I have two other sons that are still in the military. I thought they would all come back home to me safe and sound."
Michael Curry added, "He will be missed by more people than he knows. It's going to be a long road to recovery for us."
Christopher’s mother, Aimee Curry told My Wabash Valley her son was witty and loved to joke around. “If he was your friend and you said something, he was going to have a sarcastic comment and if you didn’t have a sarcastic comment back he was going to be disappointed in you.”
She added, “I’m going to miss those comebacks. He loved animals and one of his heroes was Steve Irwin so every time I watch an animal show on TV that’s what I’m going to see is Chris and he had a heart of gold, loved everybody, and he’d take his shirt off his back and give it you if you needed it.”
The Currys said they do appreciate the support of their community adding that if anyone would like to honor Chris, to please do so by sending a donation to Chris’ favorite charity Mission 22, an organization dedicated to healing America’s Veterans.
“Sgt. Curry joined Charlie Company in April 2019 and immediately became a part of our Army family. His technical expertise enabled the unit to deploy from Alaska in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, and his continued effort eased the Company’s transition while in theater. Sgt. Curry’s incessant optimism was the hallmark of his personality, and often provided respite for others during times of stress. His honesty, light heartedness, and wit will always be remembered by his brothers in arms. His loss is being felt immensely by Charlie Company, 3-21 Infantry, and the 1/25th SBCT. It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to one of our own.” ~ Lt. Col. Jimmy Howell, 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment Commander
"On behalf of U.S. Central Command, we extend our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of our fallen American Soldier who was deployed in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. Sgt. Curry's service to his country and his sacrifices will not be forgotten." ~ General Kenneth F. McKenzie, Jr., US Marines
Sgt. Christopher Wesley Curry’s mother, Aimee Curry said the family was making plans to honor Chris sometime in June with a ceremony of remembrance and celebration of his life at Deming Park. The family will share details as they become available.
Sgt. Christopher Wesley Curry is survived by his father, Michael; his mother, Aimee; two brothers; a sister and his wife.
