Hearing the GOP commentary on the unemployment crisis in our country right now is nothing less than sickening. Whether it’s altogether ignoring the immediate needs of American families or trivializing their pain, it’s been a master-class in GOP ideology.
Within the “Right” there’s even been talk that the $600 a week is “too much”. That the ’lavish $600 a week’ will cause people to become ‘lazy’ and not want to come back to work — where they barely make living wages to begin with!
All of this is exactly why we need more elected officials who know first-hand and remember what it’s like to be working-class. Very few have any experience knowing what it’s like to be poor.
People in my community may make even more than that $2,400 per month already, but because of skyrocketing housing costs and gentrification, that’s barely even enough to keep a roof over their heads anymore.
We need to not only reject the disingenuous and heartless arguments of the GOP, but promote working-class champions to positions of power in government. That way, when these decisions are made, we aren’t only playing defense, but we’re playing offense!
