Clearly showing himself to be nowhere near the mainstream of politics in this country with recent antics, the Kansas City Star delved into some writing of a then 15 year-old Hawley after the horrific crime perpetrated by Tim McVeigh. Apparently, extremism is not new to Mr. Hawley.
Hawley warned against depicting all militia members as domestic terrorists after the Oklahoma City bombing, which killed 168 people, including 19 children. Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols, who carried out the attack on the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, had ties to the Michigan Militia.
“Many of the people populating these movements are not radical, right-wing, pro-assault weapons freaks as they were originally stereotyped,” Hawley wrote two months after the bombing.
He argued that middle class Americans had gravitated to anti-government organizations out of genuine concerns about federal overreach and a disillusionment with mainstream politics.
Much more can be found here, I just highlighted a few key passages under fair use. He appears to carry water for defenders of Mark Furhman, and in one of the great socio-political tragedies of the 20th Century the use of MLK’s incrementalist approach as a pass for racist false equivalencies, says Dr. King “must be rolling over in his grave,” over affirmative action and Jesse Jackson’s promotion of it.
Piece of work does not describe this guy. Investigate and take steps to expel if the evidence is found to warrant it.
