Let me not start referring to certain folks as “unBlack”!
I just posted at the Washington Post, where Mike Pence put up semi-treasonous bunting. Pence warns against continuing Trump’s coup, but then rails against the “radical left” (direct quote) and talks about what in contrast must seem like more common-sense franchise restrictions. They more euphemistic, anyway.
My response:
I'm pretty sure it wasn't the radical left that got pissy about a fair election and stormed the Capitol. Pretty sure those aren't the voters we need to be worried about.
The whole point is that some folks who are white-supremacist adjacent want to make sure that votes cast by unWhite folk don't count. That's the whole point. Letting the Molotov throwers in Congress further restrict the franchise, particularly by intimidation and pressure upon their colleagues so as to wrangle and whip a vote, is laying down a cloched platter and genuflecting as you move away.
Mr. Pence, if this is your true sentiment, you may as well have followed through with the coup. You're advocating for the more slow-motion coup here (with, apparently, more dramatic effect--just in time for midterms?).
Just give it up. The GOP is just rotted now, stem to stern. Just terrible. Thank goodness for Dan Quayle and that his voice had your ear at just the right moment. My god, just abjectly terrible.
Came up with “unWhite” in the spur of the moment. But now that I think of it—
UnBlack would probably piss certain folks right the fuck off.
Because that’s what whiteness is: unBlackness.
Black people can be up to 63/64ths white and still be considered Black. That’s a lot of whiteness to not be White. I’m just saying.
From my complexion, anyone can tell I clearly have White ancestors. I’m not non-White. I’m not empty of whiteness, neither by heredity nor by culture. I will not call myself nonwhite again.
Still, strictly speaking, it’s the anti-miscegenists who are the unBlack ones—the ones who say they are completely empty and devoid. Of blackness.
I look forward to using the appellation as a clarifying epithet. It’ll be my own little inside joke.
